Habemus Papam:

Welcoming Pope Leo XIV

With profound joy and gratitude, I share the news that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American-born Augustinian, has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant moment as he becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy in the Church’s 2,000-year history .

Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is a member of the Order of St. Augustine and has dedicated much of his ministry to missionary work in Peru, where he also served as the Archbishop of Chiclayo . His extensive experience includes leading the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops, a role that underscores his commitment to pastoral care and ecclesial leadership.

In his first address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with the words, “Peace be with you,” emphasizing unity, peace, dialogue, and charity, especially for the suffering . He paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, and called for building bridges among people.

Let us keep Pope Leo XIV in our prayers as he embarks on this sacred journey of shepherding the global Church. May his leadership inspire us to deepen our faith and commitment to the Gospel.

God bless you all!

Fr. Patrick
